Beyond ‘publish and perish’: the new culture of reviewed preprints – Thomas Lemberger

In this seminar, Thomas Lemberger presents Review Commons, a journal-agnostic peer-review system for preprints operated by EMBO. Supported by a consortium of publishers, this platform streamlines the publishing process by generating a single set of high-quality, transparent reviews that are directly used by affiliated journals.

Review Commons enables more efficient publishing and alleviates the strain on the reviewer community. Notably, the peer reviews are posted alongside the preprints as soon as a study is submitted to one of the affiliated journals. This especially benefits young scientists, allowing them to showcase their research with expert analyses even before final publication.

As preprints gain widespread adoption in life sciences and generative AI-driven tools redefine scientific communication, this talk discusses the Review Commons initiative in the broader context of the role of open science in a rapidly changing landscape of scientific publishing.
